What to expect during a Thai massage: What you should know
A traditional Thai massage differs in many ways from Western forms of massage such as classic wellness or oil massage. First-time visitors often ask similar questions: What should I wear? How does the treatment work? And how do I deal with sensitive expectations?
Clothing and preparation
In traditional Thai massage, it is customary to keep your clothes on. Reputable studios often provide comfortable cotton pants and a loose top that allow freedom of movement. Since the massage involves a lot of stretching and pressure techniques, it is actually better not to be naked.
Modern Thai oil massages may be different: here, you are sometimes expected to undress down to your underwear or you will be provided with disposable underwear. However, being completely naked is unusual and unnecessary in reputable salons.
The procedure
The masseuse or masseur works with their hands, elbows, knees, and feet. In addition to pressure points, gentle stretching and mobilizing movements are also part of the treatment. Communication is allowed and encouraged—if you feel pain or prefer a certain intensity, you can say so.
Happy ending?
Traditional Thai massage has no erotic connotations whatsoever. In many countries, including Germany and Switzerland, there are nevertheless studios that offer erotic services – often in connection with terms such as “Thai massage” in their advertising. In a reputable massage studio, however, you should never expect or ask for a “happy ending.” These studios are exclusively concerned with relaxation, health, and bodywork. However, it is not completely out of the question that even in such a studio, the masseuse herself may ask you for a happy ending. In this case, you can simply say “no” and the matter is settled. If, on the other hand, you do want this additional service, a generous tip in cash is expected immediately after the massage.
